Another Health Update-I’m On The Mend! Hurrah!

A lot of you who have been following my blog have noticed a lot of posts about health issues. For those of you who have just tuned it, however, I will briefly sum it:

In August I began feeling slightly off-kilter, and in September it escalated to the point of near cardiac and respiratory arrest (nearly, not quite) and I went to the hospital to be diagnosed as having an allergic reaction to sudaphedrine. This sounds simple enough, except that I had been taking it for over two weeks and ignoring my symptoms. I suffered from strange lasting effects for months before I finally got myself to the doctor (several doctors, in fact) and learned that I had a myriad of conditions, most of which were caused by the allergic reaction. This problems had gotten much worse because, of course, I hadn’t learned the first time, and I let them go.

In short, I was diagnosed with: Acid Reflux, Gastritis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and Iron Deficient Anemia. The Anemia also caused a side-condition, Restless Leg Syndrome. Since the last week of November/first week of December, I have been on a number of treatments. I was put on omprazole for my acid  reflux, dycyclomine for the gastritis/IBS, and iron pills for the deficiency. I am also taking vitamins every day, including massive amounts of Vitamin C to help absorb the iron. Anyways…

Since I wrote so much about how awful I was feeling, I thought I’d write now about how much better I’m feeling. I’m still a pretty miserable person more often than not, although we speak only of how I feel and not how I act/react/interact with the world…haha. Of course, this could be, in part, the fact that I’ve been suffering from a five week long cold, and the sinus infection that came with it. That being said…

As far as the acid reflux goes, I have seen a lot of improvement. I have only about a quarter of the ‘chest pain’ I had been feeling, and the sore throat upon waking is only half of what it used to be. I’m not sure about the cough, since I’ve had this cold, but I’m fairly sure that it to has improved.

With my gastritis problems, I only rarely get that horrible burning sensation in the bottom of my stomach anymore. I am also able to eat! Yes, I have an appetite, and a rather voracious one at that! I suppose I have to make up for all of that lost time. haha.

IBS… When I get those terrible pains in my bowels, it is still just as severe and debilitating. The bright side is that it only comes half as often, if that, and that it is usually fixed with a bit of rest and, if it won’t go away, dicyclomine. My bathroom issues are also much better- sorry for the extreme information, but I think that’s the best achievement for me so far! haha!

Iron Deficient Anemia…Oh, this one is the really awful one. This is the one that still keeps me miserable, but even here I have seen leaps and bounds of improvement. My energy level, for one, is a bit higher. It’s not fantastic, but if I had been a two on a scale of one to ten before,  I am now a solid five or a weak six. My muscles still ache, spasm,and contract, but it doesn’t seem to hurt near as much as it did, although, unfortunately, it’s still happening almost as often. The heart palpitations have stopped almost entirely. Since beginning the iron pills, I have only gotten these mini episodes two or three times,and each time was less severe than the last one. My mood swings and head aches are less  severe, and the tingling/numbness in my face, legs, and arms have gone away 90%.  The only things that haven’t seen any improvement at all are that my lips are still cracked and chapped no matter what I do about it, my nails are still very brittle, i’m as pale as I was at my weakest, and I still have problems regulating my temperature (i.e. I’m always cold, unless it’s burning hot around me…then I’m comfortable).

Restless Leg Syndrome… Much, much better. This one should disappear in not too awful long. I used to have this problem every night in an extreme fashion. Now, the bother is about average, and it only happens four to five nights a week.

So there you have it! I am on the mend, and hope to continue improving in all ways until almost all of these problems has disappeared from my life forever. I think the first to go will be the RLS, and then the anemia! Thanks to all of y’all who’ve been so supportive during these rough times also. It means a lot! I’ll keep you updated! 🙂

    I’m glad you are starting to feel better. It doesn’t help that you had a cold on top of everything else. Seems like everyone around here got a severe cold and has coughed for two or three weeks after the cold was gone. I can imagine that has added to your misery. Are you drinking lots of water or tea? The reason I ask is if you aren’t that could be the reason behind the dry lips.

      Thanks Audra! You’re right- getting sick just when I should be feeling tons better is awful, but it’s manageable for the most part at least. Yeah, this sick season has been terrible. I know that almost everyone I know has been sick. My brother has been sick just as long as me and Vikki Beth have…My husband, step dad, and Uncle were all sick with a stomach flu that was awful for a few days; and then my step dad (because he’s older with a low immune system) ended up catching walking pneumonia right after his stomach flu! I’ve ran myself ragged taking care of everyone! (I help take care of my step dad because he’s disabled.) I hope everyone around you feels better soon though! and yes, I’m drinking plenty of water, and tea. I usually have at least 5 or 6 large water bottles each day, and a cup or two of hot tea or hot apple cider with honey at night for my cough. I’ve also been drinking some all natural juice…the only ‘bad’ thing I drink is my morning coffee, and I’ve even limited that. Maybe I should try adding an extra bottle of water or two a day to see if that helps. I might just need more water than I normally would because I’ve been sick so long. Thanks for the advice! I’ll be trying it 🙂
